About me, Debra Roberts, and the Help for FIP® Team

Our Savannah cat, Luna, is the first clinical trial cat to beat FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) in 2017 with GS441524. Under the expert research of Dr. Niels Pedersen, this trial at the University of California, Davis, is the ground-breaking event that changed the feline veterinary world.

As a trial participant, I share our experience and help others through my knowledge of the treatment process and by creating awareness about FIP among owners, breeders, rescues, shelters, and even vets. The Help for FIP® organization helps owners of newly diagnosed FIP cats locate safe, tested treatment and supportive resources in the U.S. nationwide.

The lack of an available cure is NOT the fault of the FDA, as many people post and report. It's unfair to scrutinize parents who opt for off-market FIP treatment—usually at their veterinarian's recommendation. Gilead's refusal to license GS441524 after providing it to UC Davis for trialing is the reason—NOT an FDA approval holdup. Gilead holds the patent, aka "the key" to curing tens of thousands of cats globally, but has chosen not to proceed with FDA approval to make it legally available for prescribing veterinarians, and here’s why:

“Gilead Sciences is known for its antiviral drugs for treating HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B and C, influenza, and COVID-19. Gilead refused to license the drug for animal use, fearing its similarity to the remdesivir (originally developed to treat Ebola), would interfere with the FDA approval process”.

Chinese companies and others worldwide started manufacturing the GS compound to sell via various avenues. **A word of caution: Not all GS brands are created equal. Don't be fooled by the first attractive website in a Google search or the unsolicited text or email from convincing scammers—ask us for help first or to see if the brand you’re considering is, indeed, safe and reputable.

While the media zeroes in on the cost of this life-saving treatment, they neglect to report on the affordability and safety. Compared to 2019, the price of GS to the treating cat owner has drastically reduced, making it affordable to nearly everyone. GS has no known side effects and is the only chance a FIP-diagnosed cat has at survival. It's common to see fundraisers in various feline social groups where generous donations from friends, family, acquaintances, and even strangers make it possible for everyone to save their beloved cats.

Do not give up, do not euthanize, and contact us at Help for FIP® as soon as FIP is suspected—timing is a critical factor when dealing with FIP, and there is no single reliable diagnostic test for FIP—even if you are told there is. FIP is a puzzle, and we can provide you with the tools to put it all together. We treat your unique case as we would our own, with personalized guidance and supportive tools, and a friendly community to help you and your vet save your precious family member.
